Home Sweet Home
As I mentioned earlier, I'm living in the caravans this year. There's a lot of new students, and so all of the new apartments are full. If you don't remember the apartment I lived in last year, you can always scroll back through the archives.
I have to admit, when I first moved in here it made me feel a little bit like white trash. I kind of felt like I lived in a run down trailer park--even though I was in the nice section of the trailer park (most of the caravans have no vegetation around them). What I could see when I moved in was.... my blinds didn't go all the way to the bottom of my window, holes in the linoleum had been fixed with masking tape, there's a lot of water damage so chunks of cupboards keep falling off etc. All I needed was the car on blocks in the front yard. I think a lot of it had to do with how bare it looked though --very white walls and very little furniture.
Now that I've cleaned it up a bunch and decorated, I'm actually enjoying living here. I printed some photos to liven the walls, and 'built' some furniture. It feels very cozy, and like a home to me. I've also been warned however that it's perhaps that just my standards are slipping, but I've had quite a few people tell me how much they like my caravan when they've stopped by. So, I'll let you judge for yourself....
This is the outside of my caravan. I actually only live in 1/2 a caravan, and this is a picture of only my half.
The kitchen is small (especially the sink!) but functional. The shelf above the sink was missing so I put up all the hooks for my cooking tools (there are no drawers for them) --I think it made a big improvement to the kitchen....I'm especially proud of these.
The bathroom. Not too much to say here....you can maybe see that the walls are only white until about knee height? I was told that they had painted the caravan just before I moved in, but I think they got bored before they finished. The bottom 1/3 of the walls is painted, and the top is still just wallpaper.
The bedroom......I replaced all my blinds with fabric, which I think made a big improvement right away.
And finally, the living room/ salon. I'm also quite proud of my shelves here--I built them the day I moved in out of some planks and bricks I found under the stairs of my caravan. At first I thought they were a bit trashy (then again, so was the caravan) but really helped with how stark everything looked with the lack of furniture. But now I think they suit the place. And my new rug covers up the rust spots (and some of the masking tape) on the floor.
All in all, I'm pretty happy here. All it needed was a few photos, some strategically placed furniture, and I could call it home. What do you think?

Looks good! If you're feeling down, just pretend you're camping. For six months.
Kind of reminds me of an apartment I had in Saskatoon on the corner of Main and Cumberland; I had a cot and shelves of planks from a garage sale and concrete blocks(that did tend to scratch the floor,I rented a couple of pictures from the Saskatoon library-one of a mysterious arabic looking woman that seemed to observe me whereever I was in the room.I loved that painting.
Our couch was someone's discarded couch cushions.
It was a good year-I hope yours is too!
